What happens to your old Suno songs now that v5.5 is retired

You open a song you started on v5.5 in August, the one with the verse you are proud of, and press Extend. The model menu offers v6, v6-wild and v6-mini, and nothing else.

Suno retired every earlier model when it launched v6 on 9 September 2026. Your songs came through the change untouched. The next thing you do to one of them will be made by a model that did not make it.

Everything already in your library stays as it is

The v6 FAQ is plain about it: "All models prior to v6 have been retired, but your songs will still be in your library and remain unchanged." You "will still be able to listen to, share, remaster and cover songs made with old models."

Links you already sent keep working. Nothing gets re-rendered behind your back.

Every edit from now on is made by v6

The next line of the FAQ is the one that matters for a song in progress: "You can continue working on songs made with older models, but any new iterations will be made with our latest models."

Suno's page on what is new in v6 names the tools that covers. Extend, Cover and Replace Section are all "powered by v6." Extend a v5.5 verse today and you get one song made by two models.

The second chorus in the stitched song repeats words the first one already sang, so the change of voice and mix lands exactly where the song asks the listener to recognize something. A producer who covers old songs on v6 described the cover changing the genre, the vocal tone, the phrasing and the structure of the source. Regenerating the whole song from the sheet keeps every section in one model.

Keeping an old file now costs a download

Since 3 September 2026, Suno caps downloads by plan: seven for life on the free plan, 20 a month on Pro and 60 on Premier. The downloads policy makes no exception for songs made before that date.

A v5.5 take can never be generated again, so the copy in your library is the only one. It stays playable and shareable on every plan, which means you only need the file if you are going to release it or keep it outside Suno. Spend the allowance on those songs.

Test any voice or persona before you trust it

Custom models were moved across for you. The FAQ says that "Any custom models you've created will automatically get upgraded so that v6 powers your model moving forward."

The FAQ says nothing about Voices or personas. Users describe personas that no longer sound like themselves, so give yours one generation on v6 before you plan a song around it.

Keep the sheet and retune the Style field

The words, the section order, the line lengths and the tags are yours, and none of them depends on a model. A Style field you tuned against v5.5 was tuned against a model you can no longer compare it with.

Suno has not said whether any retired model will come back, so plan as if none will:

1. For each half-finished v5.5 song, generate the whole song once on v6 from the same sheet before you extend the old take.
2. Download only the v5.5 takes you will release or keep outside Suno.
3. Run one generation with any persona or voice you depend on.
4. Keep your v5.5 Style field as a first draft, and change one thing per generation.
